Reno Arch- Reno NV

Reno Arch

The Reno Arch is an influential landmark in Reno, Nevada extending from Virginia Street at the corner of Commercial Avenue to Al Reno Park. The arch as popularly seen today was the third installed in this place. The original arch was constructed in 1926 for commemorating the completion of the Lincoln Highway. The present arch has covered about 5 square miles.

The Reno Arches is among the oldest and most popular structures in the city. Its appearance symbolizes the spirit of the town where it was originally constructed. It covers a considerable stretch on the south-east side of Reno across the street from its centre at Commercial and Al Reno Park. The magnificent architectural structure is composed of columns supported by high walls topped with iron support posts. These support posts were designed to overcome adverse weather conditions and are purposely made to rust away in time.

The Reno arch was incorporated in the design of the new General Motors Transportation Centre located on the south-west edge of Reno. This project was initiated by the recently elected mayor Jerry Jennings, who believed that it could not be done without the support of the residents of Reno. The Reno City Council approved the plan for the pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use area along the north-east edge of Lake Street. In order to facilitate the construction, the reno arch was retained and remained till the ground was broken for the foundation of the modern automobile museum. The automobile museum, which is located near the reno arch and showcases different models of classic and vintage automobiles was opened in March, 1995.
